Questions and answers

What is a number line?

A straight line with the numbers placed in order, the same distance apart. Numbers get bigger to the right and smaller to the left, with zero between the positive and the negative numbers.

How do negative numbers work on a number line?

Negative numbers sit to the left of zero. The further left a number is, the smaller it is, so −5 is less than −2. Moving right adds and moving left subtracts.

How does skip counting show the times tables?

Equal jumps from zero land on the multiples of the jump size. Four jumps of 3 land on 12, which is 4 × 3 = 12. Choose a jump size from 1 to 12 and watch each landing.

Can the number line show decimals?

Yes. Zoom in to see tenths, hundredths and thousandths between the whole numbers, or zoom out to count in tens, hundreds and thousands.
