Move shapes on a grid three ways: slide them, flip them over a mirror, or turn them round a point.
Slide it 2 right, then tap Check.
Slide: every square moves the same way. It still faces the same way.
Flip: like in a mirror, it ends up back to front.
Turn: it spins round a point, like a clock hand.
In maths these are called translation, reflection and rotation.
A transformation moves a shape. Children learn three: a translation slides it, a reflection flips it over a mirror line, and a rotation turns it round a point. The shape stays the same size.
Say how many squares it moves across and how many it moves up or down, for example 3 right and 2 down. Every corner of the shape moves exactly the same way.
A reflection is back to front, like your writing in a mirror. A rotation is only turned: if you turned it back, it would match the original exactly.
Children describe turns as quarter, half and whole turns at about 6 to 7, reflect shapes in a mirror line at about 9 to 10, and translate shapes on a grid, including all four quadrants, at about 10 to 11.
