The library opens at 8:00 and closes at 12:00. How many hours is it open?
60 seconds = 1 minute
60 minutes = 1 hour
24 hours = 1 day
7 days = 1 week
AM is before 12 noon. PM is after it.
24-hour clock: after 12:00 keep counting, so 3:00 PM is 15:00.
Find the start time and what happens next, then draw a time line. Jump to the next o'clock first, then add the minutes that are left. For 7:45 plus 25 minutes: 7:45 + 15 minutes = 8:00, then 8:00 + 10 minutes = 8:10.
Count on from the start time to the end time in jumps: first to the next o'clock, then whole hours, then the minutes left. From 9:40 to 11:15 is 20 minutes + 1 hour + 15 minutes = 1 hour 35 minutes.
Each row is a stop and each column is one bus. Find your stop, look along the row for the first bus after the time you get there, then follow that column down to the stop where you get off.
Ages 5 to 7 count on in hours and half hours and count days. Ages 7 to 9 add minutes across the hour and work out how long. Ages 9 to 11 use the 24-hour clock and timetables. Ages 11 to 14 work with time zones and decimal hours.
