The steps are the same. Short division keeps the working small and carries each remainder to the next digit. Long division writes out every multiplication and subtraction underneath.

What is left over when a number does not divide exactly. 17 divided by 5 is 3 with a remainder of 2, because 3 fives are 15 and 2 are left.
Work out how many times the divisor goes into the first two or three digits, multiply, subtract, then bring down the next digit and repeat.
