Pie slices, decimals and the number line
3⁄4
3 of 4 equal slices shaded
3⁄4 = 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75
0.75 sits between 0.7 and 0.8 on the line
The bottom number (the denominator) says how many equal parts the whole is cut into. The top number (the numerator) says how many of those parts you have. 3/4 is 3 of 4 equal slices.
Fractions that are written differently but are the same amount. 2/4 and 1/2 shade the same part of the circle. The simplest form is the one with the smallest numbers.
Divide the top number by the bottom number. 3/4 is 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75. The line under the circle shows where that decimal sits between 0 and 1.
Because the division never finishes. It happens when the fraction is in its simplest form and its bottom number can be divided by a prime number other than 2 or 5, such as 3 or 7. 1/3 is 0.333... with the 3 repeating forever.
